Robynne Neugebauer, PhD., was the wife of Overlea Secondary School alumnus and Alumni Association President Fareed Khan (Class of 1980). While she never attended the school she took a strong academic interest in its teaching culture, the successes of the school’s graduates, and the socio-economic challenges which they overcame to achieve them. She developed an affinity for the school because of the way social justice was practiced at the school – an area of study which was the focus of her career. Consequently, this award was established to honour her when she passed away suddenly in September 2007. The Award is presented to a single graduating student who, during their high school career, has demonstrated: a commitment to eliminating social injustices (e.g. racism, sexism, ableism, elitism) through involvement in school activities and/or the community; and shown leadership in efforts to raise awareness about these issues in the school and/or the community. The graduate must be registered to pursue a course of study that focuses on issues of social justice in one of the following disciplines: sociology, social science, social work, international development, human rights, education, or criminology.
