Overlea – Marc Garneau Alumni Association:
Marc Garneau: 1949–2025

It is with profound sadness the Alumni Association join Canadians in learning of, and mourning the passing of the Honourable Marc Garneau.

A distinguished School Patron, Naval Officer, Astronaut, and dedicated public servant who left an indelible mark on our Thorncliffe and Flemingdon Park Communities, and by extension the rest of Canada and the World.

Outside of making history as Canada’s first astronaut, launching aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1984. This pioneering spirit led him to complete three space missions, advancing scientific research and inspiring generations of Canadians to reach for the stars.

Transitioning to public life and recognizing his remarkable achievements, he was honoured on October 16, 1987 to have Overlea Secondary School renamed Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute.

Throughout his visits to the school, he embodied the values of integrity, leadership, and innovation. Taking time to meet and greet the students, host presentations and make himself available for career inquiries or discuss global affairs, these were the enduring qualities admired by the School Administration and Alumni Association.

We learned he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to pursue knowledge, exploration, and service to their country

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him and his remarkable legacy.
